The Southwest Florida K-9 Search Unit is a volunteer-based team made up of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels. Our members include students, community volunteers, and experienced K-9 handlers and trainers.
We welcome:
Community volunteers interested in supporting search efforts
K-9 handlers (from beginner to experienced)
Students seeking community service or volunteer hours
No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn, contribute, and be part of a team.
What You’ll Experience
Our team provides hands-on opportunities to observe and learn how handlers and their canines train to locate missing persons and human remains across a variety of real-world scenarios.

Ability to Read Your Dog
Subtle body language and scent cues guide decision making in the field. This is is an important part of what we do.
Patience
Progress is gradual. Handlers work through challenges with steady persistence.
Good Judgement
Knowing when to trust your dog and when to coordinate with your team is critical.
Study & Training
Handlers must master navigation, search strategies, radio communications, first aid, and other certifications.

Prior to your first visit please sign the required waiver and email to Jackie.
New Member Application/Requirements:
Once you complete your initial required visits, you will begin the process below.
Step 1:
You will have to locate the agency which will take your fingerprints for a proper background check.
Once you have your fingerprints, you need to go to:
https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/more-fbi-services-and-information/identity-history-summary-checks
to send in the fingerprints with the application. Cost is $18.00 and you will need to print a CC Authorization Form to send payment. Once you receive your results please submit to swflk9searchunit@gmail.com. Make sure you receive and save confirmation your background check has been received by the team.
Step 2:
Please note: The membership application below is only for individuals who have completed their required visits & have received their fingerprint verification from Step 1. After your required visits and fingerprint verification is completed, you will be asked to complete the membership application below. Please submit your signed application to jackieandk9conan@gmail.com.
If you will be bringing a canine to training, you will also need to provide their shot records. You will need to submit your shot records PRIOR to bringing your canine. You or your vet may email the records to: swflk9searchunit@gmail.com.
Step 3:
Ready to get started? You can begin completing your required education and certifications now! To access the details, email our Board of Directors at swflk9searchunit@gmail.com to request a password for the team login page. Once you’re in, scroll down to to the NEW MEMBERS section to find everything you need.
